My name is Rachel Fay and I am the Director of Little Learners. Our mission at Little Learners is very simple: help every child to make their mark!
How do we do this? Well, the business offers unique and exciting mark making (early writing) classes, events, and parties, all devised by a qualified primary teacher. It is designed for babies, toddlers, and pre-schoolers, to help them to learn to write through play. The overall aim is to develop children’s pre-writing motor skills, as well as their physical development.
I was inspired to launch Little Learners after my little boy, Ollie, was born in 2014. I had visited various preschool classes with Ollie when he was a baby and noticed a gap in the market for an educational class for babies and toddlers which is literacy based.
So, one day during nap time, I scribbled down some ideas, created an early writing programme and decided to spend one-month maternity pay on some stock and equipment. Once I had everything prepared, I took the plunge and put on a free taster session for my local community… and they LOVED it. Demand soon went crazy!
By Spring 2015 I was running 4 Little Learners classes a week across the North East, as well as parties and events. My return to work was looming closer and I started to think about the next steps for my business, as I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the demand and return to teaching at the same time. I decided to hand in my notice at work and take a leap into franchising.
Although this is very exciting, I have come across various challenges along the way – both in business and personally. In every situation, I have reminded myself of my passion for the business and made it my aim to grow stronger and learn from the challenges I have faced. I like to think that, if you really believe you’re going to do something, you’ll do it!
My goal for the future is to continue to grow my Little Learners franchise team across the UK and abroad. I’m also in the process of writing my own book to support the mark making programme I have devised. In time, I hope to introduce this programme into schools and nurseries, alongside staff training.
I became a WOW winner back in December 2016. It’s great to know you have access to a network of people, just like you, who are experiencing the same sort of problems and challenges – and you can talk to them whenever you like about it. The whole WOW community are so supportive and inspiring. I really believe that networking is vital for your business and can be a great way of making new connections and growing your business – which I have!
I am proud to be a female entrepreneur and have encouraged every woman I know to take their business ideas and get them started! Combine your idea with passion, drive and determination and you’ll have a successful business.
